Scenic Designer
Brian Prather is a New York City based scenic designer for theatre and live events. With over one hundred productions to his credit, Brian's work has been seen in venues both familiar and unexpected: from Off-Broadway, to an abandoned storefront in Tennessee, to the Chungmu Arts Hall in Seoul, South Korea. Brian's critically acclaimed Off-Broadway designs include Freud's Last Session, one of the longest running productions in Off-Broadway history. He has since designed the production for theatres in Detroit, Chicago (winning the Jeff Award for Scenic Design), L.A. (starring Judd Hirsch and Tom Cavanagh) and a recent re-imagined production at the Alley Theatre in Houston, TX. Other Off-Broadway designs include Patrick Barlow's new adaptation of A Christmas Carol, as well as premiere productions at Playwright's Horizons, The Duke on 42nd, the Westside Theatre, among others. Regional and other work includes designs for Goodspeed Musicals, the Alley Theatre, TheaterWorks Hartford, The Hangar Theatre, Shakespeare on the Sound, Virginia Repertory Theatre, the Mercury Theatre, the Broad Stage, and the Tennessee Theatre. For over a decade Brian has designed for Barrington Stage Company, spending several of those years developing new musicals as resident designer for the New Musical Theatre Lab curated by William Finn and Artistic Director Julianne Boyd. Brian was recently made an Associate Artist at Barrington Stage Co., joining a select group of directors, playwrights, and actors. Internationally, Brian designed the world premiere of the new musical Minyeo-neun Goerowo in Seoul, South Korea, based on the popular Korean film. Brian has also designed a variety of other projects, most recently the opening concert and CD release event for the Black Lillies "Runaway Freeway Blues" national tour. Other projects include the production design for the short film "Speck's Last," the design for the Hangar Theatre's 2012 gala, and two years designing the downtown window displays for the City of Knoxville, TN's "Christmas in the City" celebration. Education is also a major component of Brian's career, having headed the design concentration at Alvernia University after several years teaching set design at Ithaca College. Brian has also been a visiting artist at NYU, the Yale Dramat, and Emerson College. Brian holds an MFA in Design from Brandeis University and is a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.
